Affirmations - Powerful Tools For Creating Change in Your Life

How aware are you of what you say out loud or to yourself throughout your day? When I was younger I didn't realize the power of words to affect my experience in the world. I'm sure just about everyone has heard the childhood ditty, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me." Well, think again! What we tell ourselves has tremendous power to create what we experience, and by the Law of Attraction, the more we think a thought, the more we attract the same kinds of thoughts to us.

How often do you begin a thought with statements like, "I'm worried that..., I should be able to..., I don't understand what's wrong with me.., I hate.."? Or how about "I'm fat, I'm stupid, I'm no good at...", etc. When you say "I am" you invoke the Divine and add power to what follows. Remember, the Universe gives us what we ask for, what we send out with our thought vibrations. When we are unconscious about what we are habitually thinking, we send a message to the Universe that brings us what we don't want and then we wonder what happened! Why is this stuff happening to me?

Fortunately, we do have the freedom and power to use our will to make a change in those habits of thought that do not serve us. And as we change our thoughts, we change our vibrations and begin to attract more of what we want into our lives. It takes only 17 seconds of focusing on a thought to shift your energy and attract another one like it. If you can maintain the better feeling, more positive thought for 68 seconds you can begin to manifest it. If you repeatedly practice holding positive thoughts about a subject for 68 seconds, they become your dominant thoughts and you can manifest matching experiences. Don't worry about the occasional negative thought. The stream of well-being is always flowing, and as soon as you are aware of a negative thought, you can gently turn to a more positive one. There is a time lapse in which you can correct any thought you become aware of that you would like to change.

This is why many people deliberately practice affirmations to focus on what they would like to be, do or have in their lives. An affirmation is simply a positive statement about what you would like to bring about. They can be powerful tools when you write them down, place them in strategic locations such as your bathroom mirror, computer and dashboard of your car. This reminds you to say them--out loud and with feeling!--several times during the day. So why is it that sometimes affirmations don't yield the desired results? If this is happening ask yourself if you believe the affirmation.

For example, if you affirm, "I am wealthy and prosperous" but you are very aware of struggling to pay your bills, you may hear that little voice inside saying, "Who do you think you're fooling? You're not wealthy!" You've just affirmed the opposite of what you want. The key here is to craft an affirmation you can believe. Try adding words like "I'm in the process of becoming" or "I choose to be" to the beginning of your affirmation. How does that feel? Can every part of you get on board with the statement, "I am in the process of becoming wealthy and prosperous"? How about "I choose to be wealthy and prosperous"? Choose what feels best to you. What excites you? What feels really good to say? That's the affirmation that will work for you.

As a challenge to help you grow this week, affirm that you are becoming more aware of your thoughts. Any time you notice a negative thought about yourself or others, congratulate yourself for noticing it in order to change it. Then turn it into a loving, positive statement. Practice the new thought and thoughts like it for 68 seconds. You'll know when it's right because it will feel good!
